MUO: The Elimination of Age Limitations
Miss Universe Organization: The Elimination of Age Limitations
As you know, during Tanner Fletcher's NYFW Show, Miss Universe 2022, R’Bonney Gabriel announced that the Miss Universe Organization will NO LONGER have an age limit for ALL Miss Universe and associated pageants.
Including global pageants!
I will rewind back to the Miss Universe 2022 competition where R’Bonney Gabriel, then Miss USA 2022 and crowned Miss Universe 2022, was asked a crucial question. One that could possibly change pageantry "as we know it."
And that question was, “Miss Universe recently made an inclusive change, allowing mothers and married women to compete this year. What's another change you'd like to see, and why?”
Her response, “For me, I would like to see an age increase because I am 28 years old and that is the oldest age to compete, and I think it's a beautiful thing. My favorite quote is "If not now, then when" because as a woman, I believe age does not define us. It's not tomorrow, it's not yesterday, but it's now. The time is now that you can go after what you want."
Ms. Gabriel's excellent response magnified the conversation about raising the age limit or eliminating the age restriction altogether. Over the years, many competitors, coaches, directors, judges, and fans alike have voiced their opinions on this very question.
They finally got a response. Many people all over the globe and across pageant platforms and social media are reeling in this big news. Many are excited, while others are not.
FAST FORWARD TO TODAY:
These are the 3 reasons FOR or AGAINST this decision that I have noticed across social media.
Those who are excited:
1. Fully support the decision.
2. Women who aged out or retired can come back to compete.
3. Inclusive to all women from all backgrounds and ages.
Those who are not excited:
1. Support the raising of the age limit, but does not agree with getting rid of it completely.
2. Capping the age limit to somewhere in the 30's or even 40 is reasonable.
3. The organization, among other organizations has a "type."
Do you think that this decision is a "trial run" to see how it goes and then do an age extension? Or is this a definite decision by the MUO? Let me know what you think in the comments. (keep the comments respectful).
